Study TitleANU Poll 2013: Priorities for Public Expenditure
Series NameANUPoll
Primary InvestigatorMcAllister, Ian
ADA IDau.edu.anu.ada.ddi.01298
AbstractThe ANU Polls is a series of polls conducted three times a year by The Australian National University. The purpose of the series is to assess Australians' opinions on important and topical issues, with an emphasis on international comparisons. Some questions appear in every poll in order to provide information about changes in opinion over time; the majority of questions appear in one poll only. The main focus of this fifteenth poll was on priorities for public expenditure. Variables include opinions about most important issues related to public expenditures and taxation in Australia: income tax, goods and services tax, areas of public expenditure, social services, trust in and support of government programs. Background variables include gender, age, household composition, country of birth, highest level of education, employment status, income and religion. Voting preference and access to the internet variables were also included. This research is used to inform public debate and policy about issues affecting Australia.

Title (documentation)ANU Poll 2013: Priorities for Public Expenditure
WeightingThe weighting approach that was employed for the survey involved a two-stage process. The first stage consisted of applying a design weight to adjust for an individual's chance of selection based on three possible factors including the number of in-scope sample members in a household, the number of landlines in the household used for private calls; and/or having a mobile phone. The second step was to apply a post stratification weight to ensure the final sample was weighted to relevant population benchmarks for age, gender and location and telephony status. Demographic benchmarks used for weighting were obtained from Estimated Residential Population figures (2012) provided by the ABS. These adjust for census under-counting and people overseas at the time of the survey. Telephony status benchmarks were obtained from publically available reports authored by the Australian Communication and Media Authority (2010).
